Event Alerts App Feature

Airbnb Event Alerts. GA Team Project.

Tasked with designing a new feature for an existing app of a client chosen by my team.

Designed and built a prototype that seamlessly integrated the new feature for a realistic experience.

Tested on the personas my team defined through UX research, and continued to-iterate based on affinities from user feedback.

Preparation

Team Effort:

After learning our assignment and assigned team members, we took the time to set ourselves up for success.

We took the time to build a Functional Team Plan in Figjam and discuss our favorite parts of the process,
our least favorite deliverables and got to know each others origin stories.

We took the time to build a Project Plan as a group. We established a rough outline of deliverables,
the duration of each deliverable, who would be involved, and updated the progress for the team to check in on and refer back to.

About the Project...

After discussing our own pain points and frustrations with booking travel, we hypothesized that
Airbnb needed a new and efficient means in which to keep users informed about notable events going on
.

User Interviews

Objective:
To Understand the pain points of traveling during city-wide events.

We conducted 8 user interviews with people about their planning processes, booking preferences, and pain points around traveling.

As a team we synthesized the results of our research as a group in Figjam using a method called Affinity Mapping.

An emerging theme:

Users noted large-scale public events
affect pricing, traffic and availability.

Competitive/
Comparative Analysis

Waze: Real time driving directions based on live traffic updates

Eventbrite: Event management and ticketing website. The service allows users to browse, create, and promote local events

Vrbo: Online vacation rental site where property owners can list their homes for rent, travelers can book them

Marketmaker:  A Vrbo comparison tool that shows detailed data of the market’s average nightly rates for the coming year for both booked and unbooked properties (uses only data from VRBO)

Google Calendar: Google Calendar is a time-management and scheduling calendar service

Official City Tourism Websites

We discovered that..

If there’s a large-scale event, holiday, or overall busy time in an area, Airbnb provides surge pricing alerts to hosts, not guests, but doesn’t provide information about why

Official city tourism websites and apps like Eventbrite effectively use calendar features to communicate notable events

Apps like Waze and Marketmaker provide helpful, real-time data collected from user input

The app Marketmaker has the potential to be a useful tool for hosts to reference market pricing and availability, but doesn’t collect data from any sources other than VRBO

How might we incorporate a new feature that gives users more information to better plan their trips?
And on the flip side, how might we make it easier for hosts to better know how to adjust their prices?

Problem Statements
& User Personas

After synthesizing our research, we developed a primary, secondary & tertiary personas, each with their own corresponding Problem Statement.

I was tasked with designing the Persona Deliverables for the project.

Design Ideation

With this research in mind, my team collaborated in a rapid sketching and ideation
methodology called Design Studio to get our ideas on paper and then discuss
and remix the strongest elements.

As a team, we completed 2 rounds of low fidelity sketching sprints and 2 rounds of mid fidelity wire frame sprints.

Strong design themes emerged, such as incorporating a calendar and map, creating new iconography/emojis in the airbnb style, and implementing UI cards for individual events.

After the prototype was completed, we conducted usability testing on 9 different subjects,
including a SUS evaluation -- which received an 81.

User Testing

After observing our users complete a variety of tasks, we discovered that users:

Desired the alerts to happen earlier in the booking process

Were unclear about the type and scope of events, and where that information came from

Had difficulty finding the alerts through the host dashboard

Found the significance of the “flame” emoji confusing (intended to suggest a busy time)

From these results we agreed to reiterate on our designs by:

Implementing alert notifications earlier in the booking process

Clarifying the type of events, specifically their magnitude, significance, and their source

Changing the “flame” emoji to a “ticket” emoji

Re-ordering the host flow

Next Steps

To continue the project, we would further iterate on our ideas using information gathered from user testing by:

Changing the bell notification icon to be more prominent

Adding a host calendar feature

Adding extra notifications

Adding a heart (like/favorite feature) to event UI cards
